Tips for Using Reverse Sensors for Safer Parking
Many car models are equipped with advanced technology, including cameras and parking sensors. However, drivers should not solely rely on electronic assistance when reversing and parking their vehicles. Adequate skills are essential when reversing a car to park to avoid fatal accidents.
The benefits of using parking sensors and cameras make drivers more confident when parking their vehicles in tight spaces. Here are tips for using reverse sensors to park more safely:
1. Reverse cameras and sensors are a must
Many new car models are now equipped with reverse technology—including cameras and motion sensors as standard features like Sensor Features in Daihatsu Sirion.
This technology is designed to enhance driver awareness of other vehicles and vulnerable road users behind their vehicles. However, drivers should not solely depend on cameras and sensors; having good techniques and awareness of the surrounding environment is also important when reversing a vehicle.
2. Reversing a vehicle from a driveway or parking space.
Reversing a vehicle from a driveway or parking space can be challenging. Awareness and proper technique will ensure safe and smooth parking. Before parking, check around the parking area for children or other objects.
3. Once inside the car, adjust the side mirrors and rearview mirror.
This step is to ensure you have the best view. Before reversing, check for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles approaching from both directions on the sidewalk and roadway.
4. Use the reverse camera and sensors if available in the car, but do not rely entirely on these tools.
Combine the use of reverse camera technology with monitoring through mirrors and looking directly (checking blind spots). Cameras and mirrors do not display all blind spots. Use the car sensors to facilitate driving on the road.
5. Lower the window and turn down the radio volume so you can hear approaching danger sounds.
Do not rush and move slowly when reversing the vehicle. This gives you more control and time to observe, process, and respond to any potential hazards.
6. If necessary, use the horn to alert other road users about your vehicle's movement or position.
Stay focused while reversing the vehicle; do not take phone calls, adjust navigation (sat-nav), or change music or cabin temperature settings.
7. Use all mirrors before and during reversing the vehicle, and check blind spots by looking over both shoulders.
Parking in reverse gives you time to assess the space around before parking and reduces complications when exiting later. Make sure you understand parking basics to facilitate flexibility in entering and exiting a parking space.
Ideally, you should not park the car in reverse in angled (45-degree) parking slots on the side of the road or perpendicular (90-degree) parking slots on the road. In this situation, you should only enter head-in, unless there are signs indicating otherwise.
