Apa itu Velg Kaleng? Ini Bedanya dengan Velg Alloy

There are various types of rims sold in the market, one of which is the steel rim. Speaking of steel rims, many car owners mistakenly think that this type of rim is the same as alloy rims. In fact, they are very different. So what are the differences? For more details, please pay attention to the following review.

What is a Steel Rim?

A steel rim is a type of rim made from pure steel or iron material. This rim used to be very popular and was used as a standard rim by manufacturers because of its very affordable price. At a glance, steel rims look almost similar to alloy rims. However, if you look more closely, these two types of rims have very significant differences as follows.

Differences Between Steel Rims and Alloy Rims

Here are some differences between steel rims and alloy rims that you need to know.

1. Material

The first difference can be seen from the basic material. Steel rims are made from pure iron or steel material. Meanwhile, alloy rims are made from a mixture of aluminum, magnesium, and silicon.

2. Characteristics

The second difference can be seen from the characteristics of each. Steel rims tend to be heavy because they are made from pure iron or steel material. This material also makes steel rims prone to corrosion and easily dented upon impact. On the other hand, alloy rims are characterized by being lightweight yet sturdy against impacts and not easily corroded.

3. Acceleration

The third difference can be seen from the acceleration aspect. Steel rims make car acceleration slower due to the heavy weight of this type of rim. Meanwhile, alloy rims make car acceleration more agile and nimble because of their lightweight nature.

4. Handling

The fourth difference can be seen from the handling aspect. Steel rims have less optimal handling, especially when the car turns sharply or travels at high speeds. In contrast, alloy rims have optimal handling, especially when the car is cornering. The car's speed will be stable and constant, allowing for smooth and perfect turns.

5. Braking

The fifth difference can be seen from the braking aspect. Steel rims make car braking less optimal because they are not good heat conductors, which can lead to brake failure over time. On the other hand, alloy rims make car braking more responsive because they are good heat conductors, effectively dissipating the heat generated during braking.

6. Maintenance

The sixth difference can be seen from the maintenance aspect. Steel rims require more detailed and intensive maintenance compared to alloy rims. This is because steel rims are made from materials that are easily exposed to corrosion. Therefore, steel rims must be cleaned regularly.

7. Repair

The seventh difference can be seen from the repair aspect. Steel rims have advantages in terms of repair. Although steel rims can easily dent and bend upon hard impact, they do not easily crack and are very flexible when repaired. In contrast, alloy rims have a high risk of cracking when impacted, making the repair process more complex and costly.

8. Price

The eighth difference can be seen from the price aspect. Steel rims are cheaper compared to alloy rims because the material and construction of steel rims are simpler.

9. Fuel Efficiency

The ninth difference can be seen from the fuel efficiency aspect. Cars that use steel rims tend to have higher fuel consumption due to the heavy acceleration of the vehicle.

10. Design and Aesthetic Value

The last difference can be seen from the design and aesthetic value. Steel rims have an "old school" design, giving them a "vintage" aesthetic value. Meanwhile, alloy rims have a modern design, making them look cooler and more attractive.
