6 Initial Steps to Overcome an Overheating Car Engine

1. Pull Over to the Side of the Road and Turn Off the Car Engine

When the engine overheats, pull over immediately and take it to the side of the road. The next step is to turn off the engine. This is done to prevent further damage to your car. After that, monitor the temperature gauge.

2. Open the Hood to Let Heat Escape

Do not let heat get trapped in the engine compartment. Find the small lever to open the hood, then lift it. Be careful as sometimes the lever is near the radiator, so there is a risk of being burned by the radiator heat.

3. Do Not Open the Radiator Cap When the Engine is Still Hot

If you open the radiator cap while the car engine is still hot, it can cause steam and high-pressure water to escape, which can result in serious burns if it comes into contact with you.

4. Check the Radiator Water Reserve Tank and Fill if Necessary

Every car has a radiator water reserve connected to the top of the radiator. This will help you see if the radiator water is low or not. Additionally, there is also a water level indicator. If the water is low, it can be dangerous for the engine. The first step you can take is to add coolant until it reaches the top line. You can fill the tank even if the engine is hot or you can wait until the engine cools down. If your car only has a radiator without a reserve tank, you must wait until it cools down before opening it.

5. Look for Leaks in the Cooling System

If the radiator or cylinder head is damaged, there may be a leak in the cooling system. If you are experienced with cars, check the radiator, engine block, or cylinder head near the gasket for any leaks. Conversely, if you are not knowledgeable, you can take the car to the nearest workshop and ask them to perform a cooling system pressure test. This inspection is easy and may be done for free.

6. Decide Whether to Continue Driving or Call for Help

If the radiator is just low on fluid and you can fill it, it’s not a problem. Fill it up and continue your journey. However, if you feel the overheating is too severe, you can follow these guidelines:

If the water appears to be completely gone, do not drive the car.
If help is easily available, you can request a tow truck instead of driving it.
If there is no help or the situation is unsafe, it is better to continue driving for safety.

Follow these tips when you are driving your car during an overheating engine condition.

Turn off the AC;
Turn on the heater to reduce engine heat;
Always monitor the temperature gauge, pull over, and turn off the engine if necessary;
