Types of Car Lights and Their Functions

One of the essentials that must be present in your car is the lights. With lights, you can drive more safely. Even in the middle of the night and heavy rain, car lights are very much needed. There are also lights that function as signals when your car is about to turn.

Types of Car Lights 

Well, in fact, cars have nine types of exterior lights. Wow, that's a lot, right? What are the types of lights that must be present outside the car? And what is the function of each of these lights?

1. Low Beam

First of all, let's get to know the simplest and most commonly found light in cars, called the low beam or Low Beam. The range of light produced by this lamp is very short, which is why it is called a low beam. Usually, when the car enters residential areas, this light is very much needed so as not to disturb people around the road.

2. High Beam

In addition to the low beam, there is also the high beam which is useful for illuminating the road while driving. The range of light produced by this lamp is further than the low beam. That’s why this lamp is also called High Beam. This lamp is mandatory to use when driving on major roads, especially when the day starts to get dark.

3. Fog Lamp

This lamp is very conditional. This means it really depends on the place and weather. When in a foggy area, this lamp should be used. This lamp, also known as the Fog Lamp, is usually located at the front and back of the car. The function of the Fog Lamp at the back of the car is to signal other cars so they can keep their distance.

4. Twilight Lamp

What light should be turned on when the day starts to get late? Or even when the weather is very cloudy? Yup, the twilight lamp is the light we must turn on when evening arrives, as its name suggests. The twilight lamp is also called the city light, its function is to signal other vehicles that our car is on the same path.

5. Tail Light

Next is the tail light or stop lamp located at the back of the car. Usually, the twilight light and the tail light are connected through the same switch. So, when the twilight light is turned on, the tail light will also light up. If the twilight light functions to signal other vehicles, especially the cars in front, the tail light serves to signal the cars behind.

6. Brake Light

You must know that a car pressing the brake pedal will turn on the rear lights. What is its function? Of course, to signal the cars behind to reduce their speed. If your car doesn’t have brake lights, or your brake lights are broken, wow, that’s very dangerous. You could be hit from behind by another car.

7. Turn Signal

Now, this light is really useful for your safety and your car. When you are about to turn, you must turn on the turn signal according to the direction you are going. The turn signal will light up at the front and back of the car as a warning to other vehicles, even to other people.

8. Hazard Light

The hazard light can turn on all four turn signals simultaneously. This light is a danger or emergency signal. Usually, the hazard light is used when the car is in a procession to escort a funeral. It is also common for the hazard light to be turned on when the car is caught in heavy rain, accompanied by thick fog.

9. Reverse Light

This light is located at the back of the car. When the car is reversing, this light will turn on. This light serves as a signal to other cars behind, so they know that our car is about to reverse.

Now you know the types of lights that must be on a car. The lights above are the ones located outside the car. In addition to exterior lights, your car's interior also requires lighting, such as cabin lights and ceiling lights.
