Tips on How to Pass Emission Tests for Old Cars

Old cars indeed require more attention in terms of maintenance. This will affect the exhaust gases produced by the vehicle and its components that are nearing the end of their lifespan, making them prone to damage.
Currently, the government is actively working to improve air quality and reduce emissions from motor vehicle combustion. As stated in the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. P.20/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/3/2017 concerning the Quality Standards for Exhaust Emissions of New Motor Vehicle Types Categories M, N, and O, or better known as Euro IV Emission Standards. This regulation will take effect in 2018.
"In Jakarta, air pollution is largely contributed by motor vehicles. Especially with the congested traffic conditions, car engines that are not turned off produce harmful substances," explained Diah Ratna Ambarwati, Head of the UPT Laboratory of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency.
Tips to Reduce Emission Levels
Here are some tips to reduce emissions in your old car:
1. Perform regular maintenance to keep the car in prime condition
This is to prevent the engine from feeling underpowered and to reduce exhaust gas levels in the car. Maintenance can be done by cleaning the fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, oil filter, and checking the ignition system. Replace fast-moving spare parts in the engine if it is time or follow the guidelines in the manual.
2. Don't forget to check the compression in your vehicle
If this component has issues, it can cause an increase in gas emissions from your car. The advantage of paying attention to this part is that it can help maintain good compression in the engine's combustion chamber. However, if your car already has problems, it is best to take it to your trusted workshop immediately. This concerns the air-fuel mixture, compression pressure, ignition, and engine wear.
Because this will cause your car to fail the emission test and must be addressed quickly to keep the car's engine fit again. According to Diah, this emission test will also be linked to the process of managing vehicle registration and taxes. If the car does not pass the emission test, it will be difficult for the owner to manage the motor vehicle documents. So, if you still want your old car to participate in maintaining exhaust gas emission standards and still want to use it, then take good care of your car.
