How to Fix a Damaged Wet Battery in a Car

You must agree that the battery is one of the important car components. If analogized, the battery is the lifeblood of the car. There are two types of batteries in cars, namely wet batteries and dry batteries. It cannot be denied that wet batteries are still a choice for some people, even though there are now dry batteries or maintenance-free batteries that are often preferred due to their low maintenance nature.

However, if wet batteries are not regularly maintained, they will certainly become prone to damage. In addition, dirty batteries and those that have been used for a long time can also cause wet batteries to break down quickly.

Here are some easy ways to fix a wet battery:

1. Prepare Tools and Materials

Before starting the repair, you must first prepare the necessary tools and materials. There are seven tools and materials that you can easily obtain.

The tools and materials for fixing a damaged wet battery include:

  • Battery water or also known as accu zuur. This battery water can be obtained at car workshops or is widely available in the market. This battery water is usually packaged with a red label and bottle cap. Accu zuur is also commonly referred to as hard battery water because it contains electrolytes in the form of sulfuric acid.
  • Screwdriver

2. How to Fix a Wet Battery

After all the necessary tools are ready, just follow the steps to fix the damaged wet battery below:

  • The first step you can take is to start fixing the wet battery by removing the battery from the car. Don't forget to wear the gloves and mask that you have prepared, okay?
  • The second step is to open the battery hole covers using pliers or a wrench for easier access. Actually, you can also open it without tools, but it will be easier and safer with tools.
  • The third step is to dispose of the liquid in the damaged battery. Do this by turning the battery upside down. Dispose of the liquid in a safe place. Keep it out of reach of children. Besides its strong smell, remember that battery liquid is also very dangerous if it comes into contact with the body. The fourth step is to pour hot water through the battery holes.
  • After that, shake it and dispose of it again.
  • After cleaning it with hot water, you can then use regular water to rinse the battery compartment by shaking the contents of the battery with regular water. Do this repeatedly until the battery elements are clean.
  • The next step is to turn the battery upside down and let it drain until no water remains.
  • After all the remaining water has drained out, fill the battery with accu zuur water up to the maximum limit. Use a small funnel to fill the battery with accu zuur water, okay?
  • The next step is to charge the battery. This process takes overnight. Use a charger with a low current for more stability and durability.

After you have completed those 8 steps, your car battery is guaranteed to be usable again. Easy, right? Even though it's easy, you also have to regularly maintain the wet battery so it doesn't break down quickly. By diligently checking the battery water level. Also, perform routine maintenance on the wet battery, ideally every two months, okay?
