How to Properly Turn the Steering Wheel

Here is the correct formula for turning the steering wheel when turning or reversing:

Pull and Push

When turning the steering wheel, make sure you are holding the steering wheel correctly. Position your hands at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions on the steering wheel.

Then, your thumbs should not grip the wheel. Thumbs can get injured if they hit the steering lever in the middle during an accident. 

Not only that, if your thumbs are inside as if gripping the wheel, your hands can break when the airbag deploys. Then, when you want to turn, position your hands at the 12 o'clock direction.

If you want to turn right, your right hand should be in that position, then move your hand as if pulling, and adjust the turning angle and force with the direction of the car's turn. While adjusting the turning angle, the other hand helps by placing it at the 6 o'clock position and assisting in pushing. 

Because of this pull and push, this position is called pull and push. This position is usually used for light maneuvers, such as turning at an intersection.

Hand Over Hand

Another way to turn the car is with the hand over hand technique. This technique is more suitable for those who want to perform maneuvers and need a wide turning radius.

For example, if you want to turn the steering wheel all the way, or when making a U-turn or parallel parking. 

For instance, when you want to turn around, you can position your right hand at 10 o'clock, then your left hand at 4 o'clock together. Then, turn both hands together towards the car's turn. 

With a wide reach, you can turn the wheel and achieve a larger turning angle. So how many times do you need to turn the steering wheel? Sometimes, with one turn, the car already achieves the desired turning angle. 

You just need to hold the steering wheel so it doesn't turn back prematurely. If it's not enough, you can return your hands to the starting position. But, don't do it all at once because one hand is responsible for holding the wheel. 

For example, when turning right. Move your hand to the left and back to the 9 o'clock position to hold the steering. Next, you can move your right hand to the 10 o'clock position. 

For a moment, your right hand can hold the steering so you can go at the desired angle. Immediately move your left hand to the 4 o'clock position. Perform the turning motion from the beginning. 

Avoid Placing Your Hand on the Steering Wheel

First, understand how to hold the steering wheel correctly. Try to avoid moving the steering wheel as if you are washing it and just placing your hands on the steering.
