Private vehicles must have complete documentation as a marker that you are the legal owner of the vehicle. The vehicle registration certificate (STNK) is proof that the vehicle is officially registered to facilitate driving on the road or managing tax payments. If you lose this vehicle registration document, it is advisable to immediately report the lost STNK to the nearest police station.

Guide on How to Manage a Lost Vehicle Registration Certificate (STNK)

For those of you who are still unfamiliar with the procedures for managing a lost vehicle registration certificate, here are the steps to apply for a new STNK:

1. Make a loss report

Go to the police station in your area to make a report of the lost vehicle registration certificate. The loss certificate issued by the police will later be included in the application for the replacement STNK. There is no fee for making a loss report for the STNK at the nearest police station.

2. Prepare important documents

It is advisable to prepare a folder to collect all the necessary documents for replacing the STNK. Make sure no documents are scattered so that the process runs more smoothly. Here is a list of documents you need to prepare before managing a lost vehicle registration certificate:

  • Original and photocopy of the vehicle owner's ID card
  • Photocopy of the old STNK
  • Original and photocopy of the vehicle ownership book (BPKB)
  • Loss report of the STNK from the police

3. Visit the local Samsat office

Ensure the vehicle owner conducts a physical check of the vehicle and rubs the chassis and engine numbers with the relevant SAMSAT officer. Samsat offices are located in various cities or districts that are responsible for creating and validating new STNKs. You will later receive a form for the lost STNK application with the new one.

4. Manage at the BBN or Name Transfer Fee II counter

If you buy a used car and lose the STNK under the name of the original owner, you must manage it at the BBN or Name Transfer Fee II counter. Managing a lost STNK can still be based on the name of the official owner, or you can apply for a name transfer of the vehicle as long as you meet the applicable requirements.

5. Payment of taxes and issuance of a new STNK

The SAMSAT will provide a date for picking up the new STNK within 2-5 days. You can pick up the new STNK after making the related vehicle tax payment. If changing the name on the STNK for the vehicle, submit the receipt and show the original BPKB, photocopy of the vehicle purchase receipt, and the results of the physical check by the officer beforehand. You will need to pay the details of the vehicle tax for the relevant year.

You will also need to pay the fee for issuing the new STNK, validation, administrative fees, and other costs according to local government regulations. Follow the procedure for replacing the lost vehicle registration certificate or performing a name transfer along with the old STNK according to the rules set by SAMSAT.

Our tip is, when managing a lost vehicle registration certificate, do not forget to bring your own writing supplies, even though the SAMSAT has provided them, this aims to minimize queues so they do not become long.

The SAMSAT office is open every Monday to Saturday, so you must ensure to come on those days. Always try to have complete documents or photocopies of documents as a precaution in case the STNK, BPKB, or driver's license is lost. Anything can happen unexpectedly, right? Even though you can check official documents online, having your own archive is preferred.

What are the Requirements and Documents Needed to Manage a Lost STNK?

Before proceeding with the replacement process for a lost STNK, the requirements that need to be met include a loss report that can be obtained through processing at the nearest police station. Subsequently, the applicant can manage the replacement STNK at the Samsat office by bringing important documents, such as a photocopy of the e-ID (along with the original document), a photocopy of the STNK if available, and the BPKB.

After you report the loss or damage of the STNK to the police station, prepare the following documents:

a. Photocopy of the ID card (KTP) of the vehicle owner that is still valid.
b. Photocopy of the loss report or damage certificate of the STNK from the police.
c. Photocopy of the BPKB (Vehicle Ownership Book) or STCK (Vehicle Ownership Check Certificate).
d. A colored passport photo with a specific size according to the established requirements.

Of course, these requirements and documents will differ if you manage a lost STNK that is not under your name.

How Much Does it Cost to Manage a Lost STNK?

The fee charged for two-wheeled, three-wheeled, and public transport vehicles is Rp50,000. Meanwhile, four-wheeled vehicles or more will be charged a fee of Rp75,000.

Now you don't have to hesitate to immediately manage a lost vehicle registration certificate due to negligence or other factors. The STNK and driver's license are important documents that you must carry while driving on the road. So, make sure to understand the function of the STNK and always keep official documents in a safe place while you are driving in or out of town!
