Hydraulic Jack: Function, How It Works & Tips for Using It
Problems such as flat or burst car tires are unpredictable when they occur. If this problem happens in the middle of your journey, you will certainly need a hydraulic jack for the tire replacement process.
So, is there any other function besides assisting in the tire replacement process? To help you understand it better, let's learn about the functions, how it works, and tips for using the jack.
Function of Hydraulic Jack
Previously, we discussed what a crocodile jack is and its functions. Now, we will review the hydraulic jack. A hydraulic jack is a jack that uses fluid as a pressure force transmitter. This force is then converted into hydraulic power that is useful for lifting a load.
From a physics perspective, a hydraulic jack applies Pascal's law. The hydraulic jack has several important functions as follows.
1. Facilitates the tire replacement process
The main function of the hydraulic jack is to make it easier for you when replacing a tire. With a jack, you do not need to exert a lot of energy to lift certain parts of the car.
2. Facilitates the installation of jack stands
Jack stands are needed to keep the car in an elevated position. Before installing the jack stands, you need to use the jack to lift the front or rear wheel of the car.
3. Facilitates the inspection of the underside of the car
When there is an issue with the engine under the car or when installing a catalytic converter component, you need to lift the car. To facilitate this lifting process, you need a jack.

How Hydraulic Jack Works
As previously explained, the hydraulic jack refers to Pascal's law. Inside the hydraulic jack, there are two cylinders with different diameters. Both cylinders are filled with liquid or fluid.
When you apply pressure to the smaller diameter cylinder, that force will be transmitted to the larger diameter cylinder. This force will then transform into a strong pushing force capable of lifting the car body.
Tips for Using a Hydraulic Jack Properly
The use and installation of a hydraulic jack cannot be done carelessly. If done incorrectly, the car may not lift. It could also fall and crush you.
Here are some tips for using a hydraulic jack properly:
1. Determine the pivot point first
Usually, the pivot point of the car is located under the car or specifically in the axle area around the suspension. If you cannot find that pivot point on the car.
You can place the jack on the arm of the car when you want to lift the front body of the car. For the rear part, place the jack on the car chassis.
2. Know how to loosen and tighten the screw first
Secondly, you must know how to loosen and tighten the screw first. If you forget or do not know, you can read the user manual first.
3. Avoid jacking up the car on uneven surfaces
Before you jack up, you must check whether the surface of the ground or road is flat or not. If the surface is uneven, the potential for slipping while jacking up the car is quite high. This can endanger your safety and that of other road users around you.
4. Use the handbrake when jacking
Always use the handbrake when jacking, ensure the car is stationary. For automatic cars, you can use the P (parking) position.
5. Avoid jacking the car too high
You are not allowed to jack the car too high as it can make the car easily slip. The maximum height you can jack the car is 15 cm.
6. Avoid putting body parts under the car
Finally, you should not go under the car when jacking to avoid the car falling on you.
These are some ways you can practice, don't forget to always be careful when jacking the car independently.
