Fungsi Feeler Gauge Mobil dan Cara Menggunakannya

What is a feeler gauge used for? This question may often be heard when you want to delve deeper into the automotive world.

Speaking of feeler gauges, you may not fully understand it yet, or perhaps you have just heard of it? To satisfy your curiosity about feeler gauges, it’s best to pay attention to the following review.

Function of the Feeler Gauge

Before you find out what a feeler gauge is actually used to measure, it’s best to first understand what a feeler gauge is.

A feeler gauge is an automotive measuring tool made of steel, shaped like sheets with various sizes. Each steel sheet has a thickness ranging from 0.01-1mm.

For a technician, this tool has become a companion in performing tune-ups or car servicing. So what are the actual functions of a feeler gauge? Here are the complete functions.

1. Measuring valve or gap clearance

The main function of a feeler gauge is to measure the valve or gap clearance in the cylinder chamber. As is known, the cylinder chamber valve functions to intake and exhaust exhaust gases as well as fuel gases.

The heat generated from these gases over time will cause the valve to expand. This condition can affect the valve clearance and make it smaller. To return the valve clearance to normal, technicians will perform periodic measurements using a feeler gauge.

2. Measuring the gap on the platinum contact

The next function, a feeler gauge is used to measure the gap on the platinum contact. The use of a feeler gauge aims to ensure that the gap on the platinum contact is not too large so that the electric current and induction produced by the platinum are greater. This condition can enhance the performance of the spark plug, making it easier to start the car engine.

3. Measuring the warping of the cylinder head

A feeler gauge is also used to measure the warping of the cylinder head. If this component is bent, it can weaken the car's compression system.

4. Measuring the gap on the spark plug

A feeler gauge is also used to measure the gap on the spark plug that is too large to return to the normal spark plug gap (0.7-0.99mm) so that the spark plug functions properly.

5. Measuring the piston ring gap and the warping of the cylinder block

A feeler gauge is used to measure the warping of the cylinder block. If it is bent, the performance of the engine's combustion system becomes less optimal.

In addition, this tool is also used to measure the gap of the piston ring to ensure a proper fit. If the piston ring gap is too loose, it can trigger fuel leaks during the compression process. If the gap is too tight, it can cause the piston ring to jam, leading to wear.

6. Measuring the gap on the oil pump

A feeler gauge can also be used to measure the gap on the oil pump to ensure it is not too small or too large. A gap that does not meet standards can cause resistance to the oil flow to the engine.

How to Use a Feeler Gauge

Here are some steps you can pay attention to when using a feeler gauge.

  1. Clean the feeler gauge and the object to be measured to ensure no dirt that could reduce measurement accuracy.
  2. When measuring an object, the feeler gauge should be inserted in a straight position for accuracy.
  3. To ensure accurate measurement results, avoid pushing the feeler gauge too deep into the gap. You only need to pull the feeler gauge steel sheet to get a feel for whether the gap of the object meets the standard.

To ensure that the gaps of all your car components do not change, you need to perform regular car servicing at the nearest Daihatsu dealer.
