Know the 5 Functions of the Cylinder Block in Cars
Not many people know the function of the cylinder block in four-wheeled vehicles. They probably only know that the cylinder block is used as a place for the piston.
But did you know that this component, considered the heart of the four-wheeled vehicle's engine, has a variety of functions? Curious? Here’s the review.
1. As a Container to Direct Combustion Energy
In its operation, the vehicle's engine generates energy from the combustion process. Where the combustion process in the engine is similar to a gas explosion that can produce expansion energy or thrust.
It is in the cylinder block that the thrust from the combustion produced by the engine will be directed to move the piston. The crankshaft movement will reverse the piston because the expansion force is not small, so the cylinder block must be made of solid material.
2. As a Container for the Crank Mechanism to Function
The next function of the car's cylinder block is to reverse the combustion energy and make the piston move back up. This mechanism is similar to a bicycle crank where if the pedal is pushed down hard, the pedal will also be pushed up.
3. As the Mainframe Engine
The meaning of the mainframe in the cylinder block is as a container for placing some of the vehicle's engine components.
If you look at the face of the car's cylinder block, you will definitely find its abstract shape or the many curves.
These curves are intentionally made to accommodate various other components that will be installed.

4. As a Container for the Up and Down Movement of the Piston
Although it has a shape that is not the same as a cylinder from the outside, if viewed from the inside, there are several holes like tubes that are cylindrical in shape. Those holes are used as a container for the piston in the car.
When the piston works, it will move up and down in those cylinder holes. That is why the shape of the cylinder holes must match the shape of the piston itself. You need to know that the cylinder holes must be smooth so that the piston can move freely.
But if the surface is rough, it will hinder the performance of the piston in the function of the car's cylinder block.
5. As a Container for Placing ID Engine
Since the function of the car's cylinder block was previously used as the mainframe engine, the ID engine will also be placed on this cylinder block.
This component is very rarely replaced. Unlike other four-wheeled vehicle components that must be replaced, if the cylinder block is damaged, it must be re-machined.
You need to know that the cylinder block component in the car plays an important role. That is why special maintenance is required to keep this component in prime condition.
This must be done so that the engine in your beloved vehicle can work optimally.
