  1. Transmitting Steering Wheel Rotation:
    When you turn the steering wheel, the tie rod serves to transmit this movement to the front wheels. This process occurs through the steering gearbox, where the movement is translated to push or pull the wheels, allowing the car to turn as directed by the driver.

  2. Dampening Wheel Vibrations:
    Wheels traveling on the road are not always stable; vibrations can occur due to road conditions. The tie rod plays a role in dampening these vibrations, ensuring driver comfort by breaking the up-and-down movement from the wheels. The long tie rod functions to interrupt vertical movement, while the tie rod end manages horizontal movement.

  3. Adjusting Toe Difference:
    Toe is the distance between the front and back sides of the wheels as seen from above the car. The tie rod helps adjust the toe to remain within the proper limits, ensuring that the tires do not wear out quickly and enhancing driving comfort.

How the Tie Rod Works in a Car

The tie rod works by transmitting movement from the steering to the wheels. When the driver steers the wheel to the left or right, the tie rod transmits this signal to the steering gear and steering knuckle, which then moves the wheels in the desired direction. Damage to the tie rod is often caused by the condition of the rubber cover of the ball joint being torn. This rubber prevents lubricant leakage, which, if it occurs, can lead to dryness in the ball joint and disrupt the performance of the tie rod. Additionally, using the car on rough roads or irregular maintenance can also accelerate wear on the tie rod.

Can a Car's Tie Rod Be Repaired?

Unfortunately, the tie rod cannot be repaired if its condition is severe. If the ball housing has experienced significant wear, the only solution is to replace the tie rod with a new one to ensure safety and driving comfort.

Difference Between Tie Rod and Long Tie Rod

The tie rod functions to connect the steering to the wheels, while the long tie rod has an additional function in dampening vertical wheel vibrations. Meanwhile, the tie rod end functions to manage the horizontal movement of the wheels. The combination of these three components ensures that the vehicle remains stable and comfortable to drive.
