Engines, as critical components in various vehicles and industrial machines, play a vital role in determining the performance and durability of a system. Over time, engines can experience a decline in performance, wear and tear, and potential damage. In the event of severe damage, an overhaul may be necessary.

An engine overhaul is not just a routine repair; it is an action taken by mechanics when significant damage occurs within the engine. In this article, we will discuss in detail about overhauls, their purpose, and how to address them.

Definition of Overhaul or Engine Drop

An overhaul is a repair method performed to address issues in vehicle engines that experience a decline in performance, commonly referred to as an engine drop. This overhaul process involves replacing problematic engine components, with the aim of restoring the engine's optimal performance.

The concept of an overhaul refers to the process of removing the engine from its chassis, with the goal of inspecting and addressing its issues.

Thus, it can be said that a car engine overhaul is one way to repair issues in vehicles that experience a decline in performance.

This term may sound quite daunting to car users, as it can incur significant costs. However, this process can fix car problems, allowing it to be used as before.

By removing the engine from the vehicle's chassis, technicians can inspect each component within the car engine in more detail. This makes it easier to identify and repair issues within the engine.

Purpose of Performing an Overhaul

In general, the purpose of an overhaul is to restore the car's performance. An overhaul is performed when the car engine experiences severe damage, and here are some purposes for conducting an overhaul.

1. Cleaning Vehicle Engine Components

One of the main reasons for performing an overhaul is to ensure that every component in the vehicle's engine remains clean. Dirt that accumulates within the engine can disrupt vehicle performance if not cleaned regularly. Therefore, periodic cleaning is essential to keep the engine functioning optimally.

2. Checking the Condition of Engine Components

An overhaul also has another important purpose, which is to conduct a thorough inspection of the engine components. This process aims to identify parts that may be worn out or damaged and need to be replaced or repaired to restore normal engine performance.

3. Cleaning the Combustion Chamber of Dirt

As vehicles are used frequently, the combustion chamber can become a nest for accumulated dirt. Therefore, an overhaul is necessary to clean the combustion chamber and keep the engine in prime condition.

4. Adjusting Valve Position and Restoring Engine Performance

In addition to cleaning and inspecting components, an overhaul also aims to readjust the valve position, similar to a tune-up process. This readjustment will help restore vehicle performance, ensuring it remains comfortable and safe to use.

Continuous vehicle use can indeed reduce engine performance. Therefore, if there are signs of damage, performing an overhaul becomes the right solution to restore the engine's condition to optimal performance.

 Types of Overhaul

In general, overhauls are divided into two types: total overhaul and semi-overhaul. A total overhaul involves the complete disassembly of the engine, including the cylinder block, cylinder head, and more.

Meanwhile, a semi-overhaul refers to disassembly performed on part of the car engine, such as just the cylinder (without opening the cylinder block).

Signs Your Car Needs an Overhaul or Engine Drop

There are several signs that indicate your car may need an overhaul.

1. White Exhaust Smoke

One sign is the appearance of white smoke from the exhaust, where the aroma of the smoke is also unpleasant, resembling the smell of burning metal.

If you encounter this case, there may be damage to the piston, which will result in a decline in engine performance. It could even cause the engine to suddenly die and not restart.

This often occurs in older engines, but it is also possible for new cars that are not regularly maintained to experience this.

If this happens, it is important to perform an overhaul or engine drop to address the issues within the car engine.

2. Increased Engine Temperature

In addition to white smoke coming from the exhaust, another sign you can identify to immediately perform an overhaul is overheating.

If the engine temperature continues to rise and gets very hot even when driven at low speeds, it can lead to overheating, which may cause the car engine to suddenly die.

If overheating occurs, you are advised not to restart it immediately, as it can cause the engine to become even hotter.

Instead, wait for the engine temperature to decrease and return to normal conditions first. Also, pay attention to the cooling system in the car, as overheating often occurs due to leaks in the radiator.

3. Drastic Decrease in Radiator Water

If the radiator water decreases drastically or the radiator water is oily, these two conditions can also indicate that your vehicle needs an engine overhaul.

A drastic decrease in radiator water is a result of overheating that has been left unchecked and continues to occur. This depleted radiator water can directly impact engine components.

On the other hand, oily radiator water usually occurs because oil has entered the radiator water channel.

This water can cause corrosion around the cylinder head and must be repaired immediately by replacing the cylinder head with a new one.

However, if the oil has truly mixed with the radiator water, then the car needs to undergo an overhaul.

4. Spark Plugs Covered in Oil

The last sign you can identify if the car engine needs an overhaul is spark plugs that are always covered in oil.

Spark plugs that are consistently covered in oil can indicate that oil has mixed into the compression chamber.

If this is left unchecked, the oil can burn off quickly, even if the car is only used for a short time.

How Much Does an Engine Drop Cost?

The service for addressing engine performance decline in cars is offered at a price range of Rp 2,000,000 to Rp 5,000,000. The cost of components that may need to be replaced ranges from Rp 5,000,000 to Rp 10,000,000. If a packing set replacement is necessary, the cost is around Rp 1,500,000, while replacing the piston incurs a fee of Rp 1,800,000.

How much does an engine drop for motorcycles cost?

In general, the cost required for an engine drop on a motorcycle ranges from Rp 150,000 to Rp 1,500,000. It is important to remember that the amount of this cost depends on the level of damage, the type of components that need to be replaced, and the brand of the motorcycle owned by the owner.
