Causes of Fuel-Consuming Cars

10 April 2025

The existence of electronic fuel injection technology causes the fuel consumption of motor vehicles to decrease. This technology works by maximizing the supply of gasoline to the intake manifold efficiently.

However, the fact is that cars that have implemented the injection system often still experience high fuel consumption. Aren't you curious, friends, what the cause is?

Clogged Air Filter

The air filter functions as a filter for the air that will enter the combustion chamber. Its way of working is to block the airflow in the intake channel with materials, such as paper or cloth with large pores.

Therefore, only air can penetrate the layer of the air filter. If there is dust carried along with the airflow, that dust will be left on the surface of the filter.

Over time, the dust will accumulate and disrupt the smooth flow of air. As a result, the air supply to the engine will decrease, causing the piston stroke to become heavy.

The car will feel sluggish and lack power, causing you to press the gas pedal harder. This will increase the fuel supply for your car.

Large Rim Size

Most car users modify their rims to larger variations that usually have a wider width and rim. In fact, indirectly, this affects the fuel consumption of the car.

Larger rims generally have a greater weight. Rims can be analogized to legs. If your legs are burdened with something heavy, can you still run fast? The answer is yes, but it requires more effort.

When the car is modified with larger rims, it means the car needs more fuel. Indirectly, your car's fuel will run out quickly.

Turning on the AC at the Coldest Temperature

Turning on the AC while driving has become a necessity. Considering that Indonesia is in a tropical climate region, the temperature in urban areas can get quite hot during the day.

However, running the AC at the coldest temperature for a long time can also cause fuel consumption to increase, you know, friends.

When you turn on the AC, the engine will rotate the AC compressor which functions to pump refrigerant. The power required by the AC compressor is not small, especially if set to the coldest temperature.

This causes the engine's power to be divided to the AC compressor. Well, that means you need to press the gas pedal harder to run the car, right, friends?

Flat Tires

If your car tire is flat, the tire's contact patch will automatically widen because the sidewall will touch the road surface. As a result, there will be more friction on the tire and you will need extra power for the car to move normally. That means you need to press the gas pedal harder, right?

Removing the Catalytic Converter

Catalytic Converter functions as a filter for NOx gases formed from the engine combustion process. It works by blocking the flow of exhaust gases from the exhaust. NOx gases will be captured by special materials inside the catalytic and the gases that exit the exhaust become environmentally friendly.

However, such a blocking construction also disrupts the exhaust gas discharge process. Therefore, most car users choose to remove the catalytic for engine performance.

After removing the catalytic, engine performance will increase because the exhaust gases are directed straight to the open air without obstruction. However, the engine becomes faster even at stationary. The impact is that your car's fuel consumption will become higher.

Unchanged Automatic Transmission Oil

Changing the transmission oil in an automatic transmission is one of the maintenance tasks that should not be overlooked. The operation of the transmission system is greatly influenced by the hydraulic movement of the transmission oil.

When the transmission oil has not been changed for a long time, the shifting process will be disrupted and cause problems, one of which is increased fuel consumption.

So, those are the causes of your car's high fuel consumption. High fuel consumption equals high expenses. If you feel your car's fuel consumption is high, find out the cause and address it immediately, friends, so your expenses don't also become excessive.
