Causes of Car Transmission Difficulties and How to Overcome Them

Penyebab Persneling Mobil Susah Masuk dan Cara Mengatasinya

The car transmission is a system that functions to regulate gear shifting so that the car can move efficiently according to speed needs and road conditions. Generally, there are two types of transmissions: Manual and Automatic. The way the car transmission works is by changing the gear ratio to adjust the power and speed of the car, where low gears provide high torque for acceleration, and high gears increase efficiency while cruising. In a manual transmission, the driver operates the clutch to change gears, while in an automatic transmission, the system automatically adjusts gear shifting as needed.

There are several cases where the car transmission is difficult to engage or cannot shift gears in a manual car. Several factors can cause this to happen, such as improper clutch adjustment or damaged parts. In this article, we will discuss it in detail, so let's take a look here.

Causes and Solutions for Difficult Car Transmission Engagement

There are several factors that cause the transmission to be difficult to engage when the car engine is running. Here are the complete causes along with their solutions.

1. Improper clutch adjustment

The first cause of difficult transmission engagement is due to the clutch free play adjustment being too large. This issue often occurs in cars with manual transmission systems. When the car engine is off, the transmission can easily be shifted to positions 1, 2, 3, and so on.

However, when the car engine is running, the transmission is difficult to engage. To resolve this, you need to readjust the clutch free play and ensure that the adjustment is not too loose.

2. Worn clutch disc

The second cause is due to a worn or thin clutch disc. As is known, the clutch functions to disconnect and connect the power generated by the engine to the transmission. When the power rotation from the car engine is interrupted, the gear shifting will be smooth.

However, if the clutch disc is worn down, gear shifting becomes difficult. To resolve this, you need to replace the clutch disc.

3. Stuck clutch cable

The next cause is due to a stiff and stuck clutch cable. This usually occurs due to the accumulation of dirt or rust on the clutch cable. To resolve this, you need to replace the clutch cable.

4. Fluid leak in the master cylinder

Fluid leaks in the master cylinder can cause a decrease in hydraulic pressure, making it difficult for the car transmission to engage. To resolve this, you need to perform regular fluid checks. Add fluid if the fluid level has started to decrease.

5. Improper pedal adjustment

Similar to the clutch adjustment, an improper pedal adjustment can cause the transmission to be difficult to engage. It is advisable to adjust the pedal according to standard, not too loose.

6. Worn synchromesh ring

As is known, the synchromesh ring is a component that controls the rotation of the transmission gears to ensure they rotate at the same speed. However, if this component is worn, the rotation of each gear will differ, making it difficult for the transmission to engage. To resolve this, you need to replace the component.

7. Rusty transmission input shaft spline

The transmission input shaft spline is a component of the transmission system that is directly connected to the clutch disc. If this component is rusty, the clutch disc will get stuck when the driver presses the clutch pedal. As a result, the transmission is difficult to engage when the engine is running. To resolve this, you need to clean the rust using a special fluid (braso).

8. Worn shift lever bushing

As is known, the shift lever bushing functions to balance the car's suspension and dampen vibrations. This component is easily worn because it is made of rubber. A worn shift lever bushing causes the transmission selector to shift, making it difficult for the transmission to engage. To resolve this, you need to replace the component.

9. Worn shift fork

A worn shift fork also causes the transmission to be difficult to engage. As is known, the shift fork serves as a connector for the hub sleeve to prevent it from being loose on the synchromesh. If this component is worn, the hub sleeve will be loose, causing the transmission gears to shift. To resolve this, you need to replace the component.

How to prevent car transmission from wearing out quickly?

  • Fully depress the clutch before changing gears to avoid rough friction.
  • Shift gears smoothly according to speed (low gear for starting, high gear for cruising).
  • Release the clutch slowly while pressing the gas to ensure smooth gear shifting.
  • Avoid frequent half-clutch use, as it can accelerate wear.
