What Is a Pressure Switch? 

A pressure switch is a device used in various household and industrial applications to regulate pressure in a closed system. This device works by reading pressure changes in the system and turning off or activating an electrical circuit based on predetermined standards. Pressure switches are often used in various systems such as air compressors, water pumps, and car AC systems

So what is meant by a pressure switch in the automotive world, especially for cars? In the automotive world, a pressure switch is used as an acronym for the AC pressure safety switch to prevent the risk of overheating and freon leakage. 

Function of the Pressure Switch 

There are several important functions of the pressure switch that you need to know. The complete functions are as follows. 

1. Prevent refrigerant leakage and extend the lifespan of the AC

As previously explained, the pressure switch functions as a protective switch for the AC that prevents refrigerant leakage and overheating in cars. When the refrigerant pressure significantly increases beyond the specified threshold, the pressure switch will automatically cut off the electrical flow to the AC compressor. This mechanism serves to prevent the risk of refrigerant leakage and prevent wear on the AC system components, thereby extending the lifespan of the AC. 

2. Pressure detector sensor in the AC control system

In addition to the above function, the pressure switch also serves as a pressure detector sensor in the AC control system. By detecting this pressure, the AC system can control the operation of the fan, compressor, and available valves. This way, the AC performance can work more optimally. 

How the Pressure Switch Works

The pressure switch will only work when there is pressure from the refrigerant. During the operation process, the pressure switch has two working schemes. The complete working methods are as follows. 

1. When the refrigerant pressure is low

You need to know that the pressure switch has the main function of protecting AC components from wear and damage caused by inadequate AC freon pressure. When the refrigerant pressure is low, the pressure switch will be in a closed position. This is to ensure that the magnetic clutch does not activate. 

Generally, low refrigerant pressure is caused by a leak in the AC system, resulting in a very low amount of refrigerant. With the freon pressure caused by the pressure switch, lubrication will be formed in the AC compressor. 

2. When the refrigerant pressure is high

When the refrigerant pressure is high, the opposite will occur. The switch that was previously in the “ON” position will change to the “OFF” position. This condition will cause the electrical flow to the magnetic clutch to be interrupted, thus the AC will also turn off. 

At that time, the rotation of the compressor pulley that will be directed to the compressor will also be limited. This causes the AC compressor to not function even though the compressor pulley continues to work.

Considering the pressure switch's function is very important for car cooling systems such as AC, you need to check the condition of this device regularly and periodically.
