Brake fluid is an important part of a vehicle that functions as a lubricant for the disc components and brake pads.

When using brake fluid, it is advisable to choose high-quality brake fluid to ensure the car's braking system functions optimally. Before discussing recommendations for quality brake fluid brands, it is good for friends to first understand the classification of brake fluid to avoid making mistakes in choosing good brake fluid.

Classification of Brake Fluid

Car brake fluid has a specific code. Usually, this code is in the form of DOT (Department of Transportation) followed by a number. For example, DOT3, DOT4 to DOT5 brake fluid.

The number represents the brake fluid's ability to withstand maximum temperatures when the brakes are operated. It is important to know that the braking system works by converting kinetic energy into thermal energy.

Thus, the temperature of the brakes when in operation can reach 200 degrees Celsius. With such high temperatures, a special fluid that is more heat-resistant, such as brake fluid, is required. Here is a complete explanation.

DOT 3 Brake Fluid

This type of brake fluid contains hygroscopic polyglycol ether, meaning this brake fluid can mix with water. If this type of brake fluid is mixed with water, its performance remains the same and is not disrupted.

However, if the water content is too high, its boiling point will decrease. For your information, DOT3 brake fluid has a maximum boiling point of 205 degrees Celsius.

DOT 4 Brake Fluid

This type of brake fluid has a maximum boiling point of up to 230 degrees Celsius. It is suitable for older cars that still adopt high-temperature braking systems.

DOT 5 Brake Fluid

This brake fluid is silicone-based and difficult to absorb water, thus not causing corrosion in the braking system components. Its maximum boiling point is 270 degrees Celsius. This brake fluid tends to be more stable in high-temperature braking systems.

However, it is important to remember that just because DOT 5 brake fluid has a high boiling point does not mean it is suitable for all types of cars. When choosing brake fluid, it must match the optimal working temperature of the brakes. To make it easier, the specifications for brake fluid needs can be found in the manual book.

Returning to the discussion of the best brake fluid brands, here are recommendations for brands along with prices for quality car brake fluid.
