The working principle of car brakes is one of the things that you need to know. Especially if you are deeply exploring the automotive world. Knowing this will help you understand how the braking process in a car occurs.

In this article, we will briefly explain what the working principle of car brakes is. You can read the explanation below!

Working Principle of Car Brakes

The working principle of car brakes is to convert kinetic energy into heat energy. This energy conversion process occurs due to the friction between the disc and brake pads, or between the disc and brake shoes.

The heat energy produced must be accompanied by sufficient cooling. This is done to prevent excessive heat. Because if the heat is excessive, the brake pads or brake shoes will harden.

If that hardening occurs, then the working principle of car brakes will not function. Cooling usually occurs with the help of free air around the car tires.

There are several types of brakes, namely:

  • Foot brakes that function to stop the car's speed and control the car's speed.
  • Additional brakes that can assist the foot brakes during braking.
  • Parking brakes that can be used when the car is parked. This type of brake is also commonly used in emergency situations.

Components of Car Brakes

For the working principle of car brakes to function, the brakes must be equipped with several components. There are six components in car brakes. These six components are:

Disc Brake

This is the car brake component that uses a disc as its main material. When the brakes function, the disc in this component will rotate along with the car's wheels.

Master Cylinder

This component functions to receive pressure from the brake pedal. That pressure will then be sent to the disc brake or drum via brake fluid.

Drum Brake

This component, made primarily of a drum, functions to slow down the wheel's speed when braking. To optimize this function, the drum in this component must receive pressure from the brake shoe and brake pedal.

Brake Pedal

This component, also known as the brake pedal, is directly connected to the car. This is the first component used when the driver applies the brakes.

Brake Booster

This component serves to lighten the pressure on the brake pedal, especially when the brake pedal initiates the braking process in the car.

Proportioning Valve

This sixth component is commonly referred to as the balancing valve. Its main function is to balance and lighten the pressure between the front and rear brakes.

Car Brake Maintenance

In addition to having several components, brakes also need to be regularly maintained. This is done so that the brakes can optimally perform the working principle of car brakes. One way is to regularly replace the brake pads. Alternatively, you can also perform routine brake service at an official workshop.

The working principle of car brakes is one of the things you need to know. Especially if you are deeply exploring the automotive world. Knowing this will help you understand how the braking process in a car occurs.

The working principle of car brakes has been conveyed above. We hope our explanation of this principle can help you understand what the working principle of car brakes is like. Not only that principle but also related matters, such as brake components and car brake maintenance.
