All About Gaskets: Definition to Types

gasket

One of the rarely known components of vehicle engines is the gasket. This component is commonly installed as a seal between the engine block. In this article, we will discuss this car engine component in detail, from its definition to its types. All of these discussions can be followed as below!

Definition of Gasket

A gasket is a machine component that is installed between the cylinder block and the cylinder head. Its function is to seal these two components.

In a gasket, there is a fluid that can adhere to the two engine blocks. This fluid also serves to tighten the two engine blocks.

Benefits of Gasket

Gaskets have several benefits for machine components, especially for the cylinder block and cylinder head. The benefits of gaskets include:

1. Preventing Leaks and Maintaining Tightness Between the Two Cylinder Components

Gaskets can help prevent oil leaks that commonly occur between the cylinder block and the cylinder head. Gaskets also help maintain tightness between the cylinder block and the cylinder head.

With the tightness of these two cylinder components, the engine combustion chamber can be sealed. Thus, the compression in the combustion chamber can operate at maximum.

2. Conducting Heat from the Cylinder Block to the Cylinder Head

Gaskets can also conduct heat from the cylinder block to the cylinder head. By conducting heat from these two components, leaks between them can be avoided.

3. Withstanding Pressure on the Cylinder Block and Cylinder Head

In addition to conducting heat, gaskets can also withstand pressure on the cylinder block and cylinder head. The pressure is held by the gasket to prevent it from affecting the slider head.

Types of Gaskets

Now we move on to the last discussion, which is the types of gaskets. Gaskets actually come in many types. Here, we will share four of them. The four types of gaskets are:

1. Ordinary Paper Gasket

As the name suggests, this gasket has paper as its main material. This type of gasket is commonly installed on smooth and flat surfaces and can withstand temperatures up to 120 degrees Celsius. This type of gasket is also commonly used to seal oil, fuel, and water in engines.

2. Varnished Paper Gasket

Like the previous type of gasket, this type is also made from paper. The difference is that the paper in this type of gasket has been varnished beforehand. To use this gasket, ensure that the paper surface is not damaged. If that happens, this type of gasket cannot function optimally.

3. Rubber Gasket

Compared to the previous two types of gaskets, this type is more versatile. This is due to the use of rubber in this type of gasket. Rubber gaskets can be installed between two types of machines.

When installed between two machines, this type of gasket will fill several empty gaps. Thus, this type of gasket can also form a seal. This type of gasket also conducts cold water in the engine.

4. Cork Gasket Combined with Rubber

This one has a high level of flexibility. This type of gasket can be used for both light and heavy loads. This type of gasket can withstand various temperatures, ranging from minus 30 degrees Celsius to 150 degrees Celsius. The cork gasket combined with rubber also has a pressure rating of 50 psi.

Thus concludes the discussion about gaskets, from definitions to types. Hopefully, it can enhance your knowledge about this motor vehicle engine component. See you in the next article!
