Tips and Tricks for Buying a Car with Expired Tax

One of the reasons someone buys a used car is because the price is relatively cheaper than buying a new car. However, sometimes buyers are not careful enough in making transactions, so the car they bought turns out to have expired taxes. It is advisable for you to know the tips for buying a car with expired taxes before deciding to buy a used car.
In fact, the tips for buying a car with expired taxes are the same as when you buy a used car. However, later you will have to take care of the vehicle registration certificate (BPKB) and make tax payments. Cars with expired taxes are usually intentionally disconnected by the previous owner so that they do not incur progressive taxes later.
1. Place of car purchase
Cars with expired taxes usually cannot be sold to showrooms, so you have to deal directly with the owner or someone assigned by the car owner. Make sure to buy the car from someone you have known for a long time and you know their residence and family. This will help you avoid scams.
2. Check the completeness of the car data
This is important for you to do to avoid buying a stolen used car. Even though the taxes are expired, the used car you are going to buy must have complete data from the BPKB to the vehicle registration certificate (STNK). Make sure that these documents are original so that you can take care of the taxes at the Samsat later.
3. Conduct a physical check of the vehicle
Before negotiating the price, it is best to conduct a physical check first on the car you want to buy. You can check it yourself or take the car to a workshop. Conduct a thorough inspection, starting from the exterior condition, interior, battery, to the car engine. It is advisable to choose a car that is 5 - 8 years old or newer.
4. Negotiate the price
This stage usually takes longer because both parties are adamant about maintaining the price. Try not to disclose your budget to the seller. You can seek price references by asking used car dealers and adjust them according to the physical condition of the car you are going to buy. It is advisable to offer a price below the dealer's price.
Before negotiating the car price, calculate the repair costs if there are damages that need to be fixed immediately, as well as the tax processing and payment of overdue taxes along with the fines. You can offer a price based on the physical condition of the car minus the repair costs and the tax processing and payment of expired taxes.
When you have reached an agreement and made the handover, it is best to leave the name blank on the sales receipt first, to facilitate tax processing. If the car you bought has a license plate from another city, carry out the tax cancellation from the Samsat according to the car plate.
Then you take care of the expired tax at the Samsat where you live by bringing the necessary documents, such as the BPKB, STNK, purchase receipt, and original ID card. This means you are transferring the vehicle registration to your name.
After the processing is complete, you will be asked to pay the fees for the name transfer of the BPKB and STNK as well as pay the taxes that have not been paid along with the fines. In this case, you cannot pay the motor vehicle tax online and must go directly to the Samsat.
However, after making the first payment, you can pay the motor vehicle tax online. The method is quite practical; you just need to download the e-samsat application according to the vehicle's license plate area, register, and then fill out the vehicle tax payment form. You will be given a payment code that must be paid to the bank according to the instructions provided.
Make the payment, then you will receive an electronic payment receipt and an electronic STNK validation that is valid for 1 month. You will receive a STNK validation sticker sent via courier to your address.
