Understanding the types of car transmissions, along with how they work and their differences, is very beneficial. Why is that? Because you can choose a car with the transmission system you need. As is known, the transmission is a system that plays a role in converting speed and torque. Subsequently, the conversion will be forwarded to the drive wheels. For further discussion, let’s take a look at the following review.

Types of Car Transmissions

In the modern era like today, the development of the automotive world is very rapid. This can be seen from the increasingly diverse features of cars, including car transmissions. Currently, car transmissions are divided into several types. Here are the complete types of transmissions.

1. Manual Transmission

This type of transmission can be said to be the oldest and most common type. Until now, the use of manual transmissions is still found in all types of cars. From low-cost cars (LCGC) to luxury cars. The widespread use of manual transmissions is based on their function to enhance acceleration.

However, operating a car with a manual transmission requires practice and adaptation. This is because each car manufacturer has a different way of operating the transmission. Additionally, you need to synchronize the clutch and gas when using a car with this manual transmission. If not, the car's engine could stall or jump, which can be very dangerous.

2. Conventional Automatic Transmission

This type is often referred to as AT transmission or automatic. This transmission still uses a torque converter to transfer energy to the driveshaft. The simpler operation of automatic transmissions compared to manual transmissions makes this type very popular. Because, with AT transmission, you do not need to press the clutch when navigating through traffic.

3. CVT Automatic Transmission

This type of transmission is a new innovation resulting from the development of conventional automatic transmissions. When operating, the CVT transmission relies on belts and pulleys to produce an infinite ratio.

4. AMT Transmission

The fourth type is the AMT (Automated Manual Transmission). The AMT transmission has a working mechanism that is almost similar to manual transmissions. However, the difference is that the AMT transmission already uses actuators and sensors in the operation of the clutch. This means that this type of transmission does not require a clutch, but only relies on the foot brake and gas pedal. This transmission can also be controlled manually by pushing the transmission lever.

5. DCT Transmission

The last type is the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission). The working mechanism of this transmission is almost similar to AMT. However, the difference is that the DCT transmission relies on the ECU to shift gears from both dual clutch units.

How Car Transmissions Work

When viewed by type, each transmission has a different way of working. However, if viewed in terms of the principle of their mechanisms, they are almost the same. The performance of the transmission itself is based on the gear ratio value. When a car goes uphill, a greater torque is needed so that the car's load can be supported.

In this condition, the process of reducing the rotational speed will be matched with the power of the transmission. This also occurs when the car needs low torque. In this condition, the transmission will increase the rotational speed.

Differences Between Types of Car Transmissions

In broad terms, car transmissions are actually divided into two, namely manual and automatic transmissions. Manual transmission types usually have a construction made up of several combinations of gears. This construction is used to transmit the crankshaft rotation to the drive wheels. Meanwhile, in automatic transmissions, the gear shifting is done automatically.

Thus, a complete review of the types of car transmissions, how they work, and their differences. To ensure your car's transmission functions well, it is advisable to regularly service it at a Daihatsu workshop.
