As it is known, fuel is an important aspect of a vehicle. Without fuel, it is highly likely that the vehicle will not be able to move and be used properly.

In its operation, fuel is processed by certain car components to drive the engine, one of which is the charcoal canister. So what is the function of the charcoal canister?

Definition of Charcoal Canister

The various components that make up a four-wheeled vehicle each play their respective roles, one of which is the charcoal canister. Often referred to as the vapour canister, this component is part of the combustion system in vehicles.

Charcoal canister has a shape resembling a tube, which is used to store charcoal or activated carbon material. Inside a four-wheeled vehicle, the charcoal canister is directly connected to the fuel tank, the carburetor float chamber, and the filling hole of the carburetor

Charcoal canister was first implemented in cars in the 1970s. In fact, in the United States, there are specific regulations that require citizens to use cars equipped with charcoal canisters.

This aims to reduce environmental pollution in the United States. At that time, the function of the charcoal canister still operated conventionally.

Where the charcoal canister relied solely on the vacuum condition of the intake manifold or the inlet passage of the combustion chamber. However, currently, the charcoal canister operates with the help of advanced technology.

In its operation, the component called the charcoal canister is equipped with an electrical control system that has integrated with the engine controller so that it can be operated automatically.

The fuel vapor in the charcoal canister will be stored while the vehicle's engine is off, then channeled to the intake manifold or the inlet passage of the combustion chamber when it is turned on.

The fuel that is directed to the intake manifold will later be burned in the combustion chamber. The purpose of the combustion is to reduce the hydrocarbon gases emitted by the fuel.

When the vehicle's engine is turned off and the surrounding temperature becomes hot, the fuel in the tank will evaporate and be channeled to the charcoal canister through the ventilation hose.

The function of the charcoal canister will filter the vapor and store it to be channeled to the intake manifold until the engine is started. The presence of the component called the charcoal canister is very important for four-wheeled vehicles. Especially for channeling fuel to drive the vehicle's engine.

However, sometimes this component may experience damage due to infrequent maintenance. Therefore, you also need to pay attention to the condition of each component at an official service center.
