A car alternator is also commonly referred to as an ampere dynamo. A car alternator is a component in a car that functions to generate electrical current for all components that require an electrical flow, such as the AC, car lights, and car audio. Not only that, the alternator also functions to charge the car battery to keep it at a stable voltage so that the battery does not drop. The car alternator utilizes the principle of electromagnetic work. By utilizing this principle, the alternator plays an important role in ensuring that the electrical components in the car continue to function and have sufficient electrical power.

A car that is not equipped with an alternator will have low performance. When the car battery is depleted, the car will experience engine stalling due to the lack of an energy generator. You can imagine, right, friends, the importance of a car alternator? Well, basically the way an alternator works is by converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. It does this by converting the engine's rotation into electrical energy by utilizing the aforementioned electromagnetic work principle.

The alternator is connected to the car engine using a belt or fan belt. When the car engine rotates, the belt will also rotate the pulley wheel on the alternator. This rotation is utilized by the alternator to generate electrical energy. One rotation of the car engine will produce two rotations of the pulley wheel on the alternator.

The way a car alternator works is by generating electrical current from the stator coil. Then, this electrical current is regulated by the IC regulator so that the generated electrical voltage is not excessive and can be used to charge the car battery. The alternator also contains important components that support its function as an electrical energy generator, namely the rotor, stator, rectifier, and regulator. So, what are the functions of these four important components in the alternator?

Rotor

The rotor is the part that rotates inside the stator. The rotor functions to generate a magnetic field. Inside, there is a collection of rotors or rotor coils that serve to generate the magnetic field. When electrical current is passed through the coil, some of the magnetic poles on the core will polarize into N poles and some into S poles. The poles on the rotor are shaped like shells and are curved. This shape allows the rotor to rotate inside the stator. Usually, a cooling fan is installed on both sides of the rotor.

Stator

The stator is a collection of copper arranged so that the rotor can rotate inside it. The stator functions to generate alternating current. Generally, the stator has three independent coils that induce electromotive force (emf).

Rectifier

If there is alternating current that is not suitable for use in the car's electrical system, that current must be converted to direct current. The alternating current induced in the stator coil is converted by the rectifier. The diode in the rectifier is a semiconductor component that allows current to flow in one direction and blocks current flowing from the opposite direction. The rectifier also functions to prevent current from the battery to the alternator if the voltage generated by the alternator is lower than the battery voltage.

Regulator

To obtain a smooth and stable current and voltage, a regulator is needed. This is because the electrical voltage generated by the stator is unstable. Simply put, the regulator functions to control the electrical current entering the rotor. If the electrical current in the stator is insufficient, the regulator will add electricity to the rotor, but if it is excessive, the regulator will reduce the amount of electricity entering the rotor. Thus, the voltage and electrical current generated by the alternator will always be stable and constant.

After understanding the parts of a car alternator, friends must be more aware of maintaining the electrical condition of the car. In maintaining the car alternator, there are several important things to consider, first avoid modifying lights with variations that require too much power supply. Second, you should also avoid installing audio systems that are beyond standard. If you use higher standards for the audio and lights, it means you need to upgrade the electrical partition in your car. Easy, right, friends?
