Hearing the word aerodynamics in automotive brings to mind an image of a vehicle. This technology was initially developed for airplanes. 

However, the rapid development of technology also allows this aerodynamics to be utilized for land transportation. Here are the details.

What is Aerodynamics?

Before knowing more, it is important to understand the meaning of the word aerodynamics. Aerodynamics comes from the words aero and dynamic, which mean air and force of motion. 

In this context, aerodynamics can be defined as a branch of science concerning the dynamics of gases and fluid dynamics closely related to air in the atmosphere.

You can even relate several physical laws when understanding this technology. There are the law of conservation of mass, the law of conservation of momentum, and the law of conservation of energy that you can use to describe the concept of aerodynamics. 

These three laws can provide an insight into the application of this technology in the automotive world.

How Aerodynamics Technology Works or is Applied

Aerodynamics has been applied to land transportation by modifying the functions presented for airplanes. 

Airplanes that fly in the sky and penetrate the air utilize this technology to operate optimally. 

Knowing this condition, the automotive world also tries to modify so that aerodynamics can be applied to cars. 

This technology is presented so that every car in motion can minimize wind or air resistance. You can even recognize this technology by the term COD or Coefficient of Drag.

The way aerodynamics works is essentially applied to the model of the car's body. In fact, the smaller the air resistance, the better the stability of the vehicle's speed and fuel efficiency. 

This technology can even present forms of front and rear spoilers, wings, deflectors, and side skirts.

Front and rear spoilers are presented in the form of the car's body at the front and rear that are lower or resemble slopes. 

This shape serves to make the car faster when in motion. Additionally, other body shapes can create downforce, turbulent forces, and skin friction forces when passing through and against wind or air resistance.

Benefits of Using Aerodynamics

If you are not aware of this, you might only choose a car shape that looks good when asked to choose. However, the body shape used for a car actually takes this technology into serious consideration. 

The function of this technology is to maintain the balance of the car when traveling at high speeds.

Each body presented on every car can also ensure the safety of passengers when driving the car. These components can even function to control various wind directions passing through the car. 

Therefore, you can avoid accidents when traveling at high speeds by choosing a car with a low COD.

The use of aerodynamics with a very low COD is often specifically designed for racing cars. These cars are often equipped with splitters, hood vents, dive planes, NACA ducts, side vents, side skirts, underbelly, diffusers, spoilers, and rear wings
