Not Just a Name, Here Are Some Differences Between 2-Stroke and 4-Stroke Engines!

Almost the entire population of the country has personal vehicles to facilitate their daily work. Although they often drive them, not many understand the difference in the working principles of 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. To recognize the differences between 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines more deeply, please read the brief review below.

1. Working Principle

The first difference can be seen from the working principles of both engines. The 2-stroke engine only requires 2 strokes to produce energy.

In each stroke, it only requires half a rotation. Thus, the principle of the 2-stroke engine can produce combustion for each crankshaft rotation.

In contrast, the 4-stroke engine requires 4 strokes for the engine to produce energy as needed. The working principle of this engine requires about half a crankshaft rotation.

In other words, this type of engine can produce combustion in just 2 crankshaft rotations. This is what makes these two types of engines very different.

2. Fuel Consumption

The difference between 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines can also be felt in the fuel consumption required. The 2-stroke engine is considered much more wasteful in terms of fuel consumption compared to the 4-stroke engine.

This is influenced by the amount of power it can produce in relation to the amount of combustion performed by the 2-stroke engine.

While the 2-stroke engine requires a balanced amount, the 4-stroke engine has successfully produced power with only half the amount of combustion.

This significant difference indicates that the 4-stroke engine is superior in fuel consumption. As a result, owners of vehicles with this engine can save on fuel expenses.

3. Engine Oil Consumption

In addition to fuel consumption, the difference between 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines is also evident in their engine oil consumption. Vehicles equipped with 2-stroke engines generally use side oil that has a similar function to regular engine oil. However, side engine oil will gradually run out when the vehicle's engine is continuously operated.

This is because side engine oil serves as a lubricant for the movement of the piston and is automatically burned along with it.

This is the reason why the vehicle's exhaust produces white smoke that rises into the air. Meanwhile, the 4-stroke engine does not require side engine oil, as its engine oil is already contained in the crankcase.

4. Emissions Produced

Emissions are gases that come from the combustion residue of the vehicle's engine. The 2-stroke engine performs the combustion process to produce greater power.

However, the output power it produces does not exceed that of the 4-stroke engine. In other words, the 2-stroke engine produces emissions with residual gasoline content that can be hazardous.

5. Output Power Produced

The next difference between 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines lies in the output power they can produce.

As previously explained, the 2-stroke engine produces a rotation in one crankshaft rotation, while the 4-stroke engine requires two crankshaft rotations to produce combustion. Automatically, the output power of the 4-stroke engine is greater than that of the 2-stroke engine.

These are some differences in engines that implement 2-stroke and 4-stroke systems. Even just by looking at their working methods, we can see that these two types of engines have fundamental differences.

Each type of engine has its own advantages and disadvantages, making it important to understand them more deeply to comprehend their workings.
