When there is a queue in a multi-story parking building, your car suddenly rolls back or stalls. Especially if the car you are driving is a manual transmission, and you are a beginner driver. Don't panic, you can follow the tips for driving a manual car in traffic, especially when on an incline.

Curious about how to do it? Check out the complete information below!

8 Ways to Drive a Manual Car in Traffic on an Incline

Driving a manual car indeed requires extra skill and patience. You must be able to manage speed by frequently shifting gears. Especially when you have to drive on hilly roads. The situation is further complicated by traffic jams, requiring the car to be stopped.

Now, let's directly follow the steps on how to drive a manual car in traffic on an incline, as follows:

1. Ensure the incline level

The first thing you need to ensure when driving on an incline is the level of the terrain.

You can choose a medium gear if the incline is not too extreme. If the terrain you are traversing has an extreme incline, you can use a low gear.

2. Traffic jam on an incline

When you are driving and passing through an incline, and there is a traffic jam in that area, you need to be ready to use the brakes and position the gear to low. You can apply three braking methods.

You can start with the handbrake, then the foot brake, and use the 'half' clutch if driving a manual car. You need to practice often to apply this method, as it is indeed difficult to do.

3. Use the handbrake for long traffic jams

When you are driving and encounter a traffic jam on an incline, choose to use the handbrake rather than the foot brake and use the half clutch.

This will anticipate fatigue in your foot from pressing the brake. You also need to be in prime condition when driving a car, especially on long trips.

4. Use the foot brake for short stops

Frequent contact of your foot on the clutch pedal can wear out the clutch, so a foot braking technique combined with gas and clutch pedal play is needed, especially if you are in not too heavy traffic.

If the situation is not completely jammed, you need to be skilled at opening and closing the gas until traffic flows smoothly again.

5. Maintain distance from other vehicles

For safety, always maintain an ideal distance from other vehicles when driving on an incline. The distance should not be too close or too far.

This will protect you from collisions, as you may not know if the car in front or behind is ready to face unexpected situations. By maintaining distance, you have more time to react to a dangerous condition.

6. How to use the handbrake

When you decide to use the handbrake, position your left foot on the clutch pedal by pressing it fully.

Your right foot should remain ready to press the gas pedal, while your left hand prepares to control the handbrake lever.

When the car is stopped, pull the handbrake and press the clutch pedal until the car is held on the incline but the engine is still running. Always keep your car's gear in position 1.

When the car is about to move, press the lock on the handbrake lever and slowly lower the handbrake. Then simultaneously, press the gas pedal to around 2000 RPM while lifting the clutch to the halfway position (do not release completely).

Since you chose to use the half clutch system, keep the engine RPM above 2000 RPM with a speed that is not too high.

When the car in front of you stops again, immediately lift the handbrake lever and press the clutch pedal. Remember to perform the handbrake and clutch adjustment steps simultaneously so that the car does not roll back.

7. How to use the brake pedal

If you want to use this technique, it is recommended for those who are already experts in controlling a manual car. When the car stops on an incline, press the clutch with your left foot and press the brake pedal with your right foot.

When you are about to move, shift your right foot to the gas pedal while quickly pressing it to around 2000 RPM. At the same time, lift the clutch pedal to the halfway position so that the car does not roll back.

8. How to press the brake and clutch pedals simultaneously

This technique can only be done when your car has closely positioned clutch and brake pedals. When stopped on an incline, press both pedals simultaneously, namely the brake and clutch pedals using your left foot, automatically the car stops and the engine remains running. Use the transmission in gear position 1.

When the car is about to move, press the gas pedal to around 2000 RPM and simultaneously, lift your left foot to slowly raise the clutch and brake to the halfway position.

Use the half clutch technique but the brake pedal is also on standby, and when the car in front stops, you immediately press your left foot to stop the car without turning off the engine.

Before you really experience a traffic jam on an incline, especially if you are using a manual car, follow the tips for driving a manual car in traffic, learn how to do it, and practice directly with simulations.

If you truly experience that situation on the road, don't panic and follow the instructions as you did when you learned to drive.
