When your car engine's performance experiences issues as if it lacks power, it means you need to be cautious. Usually, this condition indicates that the piston rings need to be replaced immediately. How to install car piston rings should also be carefully and meticulously observed.

If the installation is done incorrectly, carelessly, or in reverse, the car engine will be difficult to start, lack power, make a clicking sound, and emit a lot of white smoke from the exhaust. Of course, you do not want to experience that.

Steps to Properly Install Piston Rings

Before carrying out the installation steps, do you already know the function of these piston rings? So, the piston rings function to prevent leakage in the compression within the combustion chamber.

In addition, the important role of car piston rings is to transfer heat and reduce friction in the cylinder walls.

To prevent the car from smoking when installing piston rings, follow these steps for properly installing gasoline and diesel car piston rings.

1. Disassemble the Engine

When you want to install new piston rings, you can disassemble the car engine first because the pistons are located inside the engine.

Before disassembling, make sure you are familiar with the layout of the components in the engine area to make it easier for you during installation. Ensure you have removed the piston from the piston rod.

2. Remove the Piston Rings

Once you have removed the piston from its rod, the next step is to carefully remove the piston rings one by one, starting from compression ring 1, compression ring 2, to the oil ring.

3. Clean the Piston Ring Groove

Next, you can clean the groove or channel of the piston rings before proceeding with the installation process.

The cleanliness of the groove greatly determines your success during the piston ring installation process.

Dirt that sticks to the groove can cause the rings not to fit properly during installation due to obstructions from the dirt. It is advisable to clean the area first using a brush or compressor.

4. Install Piston Rings One by One in Order

Piston rings basically have three types: compression ring 1, compression ring 2, and oil ring. Before proceeding with the installation steps, it is best to know the characteristics of each type of piston ring.

  • Compression Ring 1

This type of ring has a distinctive oval or tapered shape at the edge, is gray or white in color, located at the top part of the piston, and plays a role in engine compression.

  • Compression Ring 2

This type of ring serves to generate engine compression and prevent engine oil from entering the combustion chamber.

Thus, this ring prevents oil wastage and prevents your car engine from smoking. It has a square edge shape, is black in color, and is located in the second lane.

  • Oil Ring

This type of ring is located at the bottom part of the piston, has a spiral shape, is bright in color, and serves as oil filtration to prevent it from entering the cylinder surface.

This ring has 3 parts that must be installed correctly according to the arrangement of rail ring (on top), spiral expander ring (in the middle), and rail ring (at the bottom).

After knowing the types, it's time to install them while paying attention to the correct arrangement of the piston rings as follows:

  1. Install compression ring 1, make sure you have checked the letter code and ensure it faces upwards
  2. The second step is to install compression ring 2 as in the previous step
  3. Next, install the oil ring according to the correct order.

Make sure you perform the above steps correctly and do not install the piston rings incorrectly. It's quite easy, right? The last step is to install the piston rings into the cylinder block.

5. Install Piston Rings into the Cylinder Block

After the piston rings are installed in the correct order, you can directly install the piston rings into the cylinder block of the car.

That's how to install piston rings in a smoke-free manner that you can apply when your car engine has issues. Although it is relatively easy, precision is required during the installation process.

For those of you who are not confident in performing the installation process yourself at home, it is advisable to take your car to the nearest official Daihatsu workshop.
