Grease is generally applied to the positive terminal of conventional or wet car batteries. The main purpose is to prevent the formation of crust or mold on the positive terminal.

There are many factors that can cause this disturbing mold to appear, such as humidity, oxidation of the battery water which is the electrolyte fluid, excessive heat at the positive pole of the battery, loose clamps on both poles of the battery, or due to excessive battery water volume.

Mold on car batteries is usually white and accumulates in the area of the battery head. The application of grease is known to prevent the appearance of this mold.

Although beneficial, the application of grease to the positive terminal of the battery should not be excessive. Excessive grease application can actually risk disrupting the flow of electric current from the battery when the car engine is started. It is recommended to apply just enough grease to form a thin layer.

Tips for Cleaning Mold That Has Already Appeared on the Battery Head

If you have already found white mold accumulating on the positive terminal of your car battery, there is no need to panic. This white mold or crust can indeed risk shortening the battery's lifespan, but cleaning it is actually quite simple.

This mold can generally be easily cleaned using hot water poured directly onto the affected area. To make the cleaning more effective and faster, it is recommended to use hot water with a minimum temperature of around 70°C. 

If hot water still does not completely remove the mold, you can continue cleaning it using an old toothbrush gently brushed over the moldy battery head area. This method will be very helpful in cleaning narrow gaps or hard-to-reach parts of the battery.

To make it easier to clean, you can also carefully remove the battery first. After the cleaning process is complete, don't forget to prepare a clean, dry cloth and grease. 

The cloth is useful for wiping off any water from the cleaning process that may drip elsewhere and increase humidity, while the grease can be used to facilitate the reinstallation of the battery that has been removed and also coat the positive pole to prevent mold from appearing again.
