The clattering sound from the car engine is a sign that something is wrong with the engine, and this symptom should not be taken lightly. This condition often makes car owners panic and confused, especially if they do not know the cause.

Usually, the sound that appears is heard like a metal knock from inside the hood when the car is started. In fact, the sound can become louder when the car is in motion.

The cause of the clattering sound from the car engine can be influenced by several factors. As a car owner, you need to know the cause so that this issue can be addressed promptly. Let's take a look at the discussion below to learn more about the causes of the clattering sound from the car engine.

1. Oil has not risen

The clattering sound from the car engine can be caused by oil that has not risen. This symptom usually occurs when the car is about to be warmed up after being parked for a long time, for example, three days to a week.

It is important to note that car oil can flow to all parts of the engine that need it with the help of a tool like a pump. This pump will only work when the car engine is started. The clattering sound that appears can be considered normal because the oil has not fully risen yet.

However, you do not need to worry if the cause is just because the oil has not risen. Once the circulation is smooth, the clattering sound can disappear on its own.

2. Wide valve clearance

Valve clearance is the distance between the valve stem and the rocker arm, which serves to provide space if any metal components expand when the engine operates. If the clearance is too loose or wide, then this component can elongate further.

The safe distance for valve clearance to allow for expansion is about 0.3 mm. It is advisable to avoid setting the clearance too wide to prevent the stem and rocker arm from colliding.

3. Worn crankshaft bearings

The crankshaft, or commonly referred to as the crankshaft, is a component that functions to convert the up and down motion of the piston into rotational motion. There are two bearings in this component called the main bearing and conrod bearing that can wear out at any time.

When these bearings wear out, it can make the engine sound rougher until the clattering sound is heard when the car is moving at high speed.

The damage caused by worn crankshaft bearings is relatively minor, but the sound that emerges can make the driver anxious and worried. The best solution to address this is to replace the worn bearing rubber.

4. Damaged flywheel flange

Especially for automatic car owners, the clattering sound that appears is often caused by a damaged flywheel flange. This component is located in the torque converter. The sound arises due to a part of the flywheel flange that is broken or shifted, causing it to touch the car body. Immediately replace this component if its condition is no longer feasible, okay!

5. Using incorrect fuel

Every car is usually accompanied by information about the fuel that is suitable according to the manufacturer's recommendations. In this case, it generally refers to the octane rating.

When there is fuel that does not match the octane rating and is processed by the engine, the clattering sound can be heard from under the hood. This condition is commonly referred to as engine knocking or the engine pinging.

As a result of using fuel that is not recommended, the combustion process becomes imperfect. The impact is friction that sounds like metal knocking and can be heard from inside the engine.

Signs of an engine experiencing engine knocking can appear when the car is moving at low RPM. If this happens, you need to perform a tune-up and replace the fuel with the recommended one.

These are some of the causes of the clattering sound from the car engine that you need to know. Don't panic if that sound appears, immediately detect the cause and address the issue by taking the car to your trusted workshop.
