Is the handbrake for the front or rear wheels of the car? This question often colors automotive forums on social media. The numerous questions regarding the handbrake are inseparable from the curiosity of novice car drivers. So, which wheels are appropriate? Let's find the answer by paying attention to the following discussion.

Is the Car Handbrake for the Front or Rear Wheels?

The car handbrake is part of the car braking system and is an additional feature. The handbrake is located on the right or left side of the driver's seat depending on the type of car you are using. The car handbrake functions to slow down the car, stop the car when parked, or navigate through a slope.

So, does the car handbrake operate the front or rear wheels? Generally, the handbrake is used for the rear wheels of the car because this component is directly connected to the rear wheels. However, some cars have handbrakes that are directly connected to the front wheels of the car.

In cars with a handbrake system for the rear wheels, the handbrake functions as an additional brake. This brake operates independently even though the car has a main brake. When you pull the handbrake, the cable connected to the rear brake system is also pulled. This condition causes the disc and brake pads to rub against each other, allowing the car to move backward when parked.

Meanwhile, in cars with a handbrake system for the front wheels, the handbrake functions as a cable actuator that is directly connected to the front brake system of the car. This way, the control of the car can be managed well, making the car's movement slower when passing through damaged roads or inclines.

How to Use the Handbrake Correctly

Using the handbrake is recommended when you want to park the car on uneven or sloped surfaces. Additionally, the handbrake is also recommended when the car's main brake system fails to function. Here are some ways to use the handbrake correctly that you can follow.

1. Check the condition of the car

Before using the handbrake, you need to ensure the condition of the car is in a safe zone. You also need to make sure the car is parked, the main brake is engaged, the engine is turned off, and the ignition key is deactivated. This is necessary so that when using the handbrake, the car does not move or roll unintentionally.

2. Pull the handbrake lever

Next, you need to pull the handbrake lever firmly when the car is confirmed to be safe. The handbrake is usually located on the right or left side of the driver's seat. Ensure that the handbrake cable is not damaged or loose, and make sure the handbrake lever is stable and not wobbly.

3. Release the handbrake lever

Next, you need to release the handbrake lever by pressing the release lever or button located next to the lever. Remember, this release of the handbrake should only be done when the car is deemed ready to move. Similar to when the car is about to be driven.

4. Ensure the handbrake functions normally

After releasing the handbrake, you need to ensure that the handbrake functions normally so that the car moves smoothly.

5. Ensure the use of the handbrake with the type of braking system when parking on a slope

When parking the car on a sloped surface, you need to pull the car's handbrake firmly to lock the wheels. Next, you can add wheel blocks or bricks to chock the car's tires as extra security. This is necessary to prevent the car from moving or rolling when parked.

Meanwhile, for cars with a handbrake system connected to the front wheels, you need to be careful when pulling the lever. Make sure you do not pull it too hard, so the front wheels do not lock. Because if this happens, it can reduce the car's stability when climbing.
