The engine block component of a car is one of the crucial components of the car's engine. This component can be said to have various functions. To help you understand it better, let's take a look at the following review.

Overview of the Engine Block Component in Cars

The engine block component is actually the seat or housing for various engine components, ranging from pistons, cylinder heads, to crankshafts. Therefore, the engine block is large in size and made of strong materials such as cast iron or aluminum.

Components Inside the Car Engine Block

Here are some components found inside the car engine block.

1. Crankcase

Functions as a bearing and housing for the crankshaft, often referred to as the crankcase.

2. Engine mounting

Functions as a vibration damper caused by the car engine because this component contains rubber. Additionally, the engine mounting can be used to connect the chassis to the engine.

3. Cylinder

Functions as the moving hole for the piston.

4. Piston

Functions as the generator of rotation or the producer of combustion energy.

5. Piston ring

Functions as a preventer of oil leakage or oil seepage when the piston moves.

6. Piston rod or connecting rod

Functions to connect the piston to the crankshaft.

7. Water jacket

Functions as a special place within the engine cooler to reduce the heat temperature in the engine.

8. Flywheel

Functions as a storage for rotational energy to control the speed of rotational energy from the piston.

9. Crankshaft

Functions as a converter of power from the piston movement into engine rotational energy.

How the Engine Block Works

The working principle of the engine block is quite simple, which is to move the piston to generate push energy for engine combustion. Although simple, it greatly affects engine performance.

Functions of the Car Engine Block

The engine block component of a car has several important functions for the car's engine. Here are the complete functions.

1. Piston driver

The engine block functions as a piston driver to move up and down. The engine block is designed according to the shape of the piston. Additionally, the surface of the hole in the engine block is intentionally made smooth so that the piston can move up and down smoothly without obstruction.

2. Producer of combustion energy

When the piston moves, the part of the engine block shaft will cause combustion energy, creating engine thrust. This power can then drive other engine components.

3. Mainframe engine

As previously explained, the engine block is the seat or housing for other engine components. This condition is often referred to as the mainframe engine (engine housing). Here are some components stored in the engine block.

  • Cylinder head
  • Water pump
  • Oil channels
  • Oil filter
  • Alternator and starter motor

4. Engine ID

The engine block also serves as the engine ID directly from the car manufacturer or the place where the engine frame number is written.

5. Center of crank mechanism

The crank mechanism in the engine block can be said to resemble the crank mechanism in a bicycle. Therefore, the energy created is in the form of rotational energy that can raise the combustion energy of the piston upwards. The crank components themselves consist of the crankshaft and connecting rod.

6. As a channel for lubricant oil and cooling channel

The engine block functions as a container for the lubricant oil channel and the cooling channel. These two channels are separate even though they are both channels from the crankshaft. Lubricant oil is used to ensure smooth movement of the piston in the engine block hole. Meanwhile, the cooling system is used to prevent overheating in the engine.

7. Reservoir for cylinder line, flywheel, and cylinder head

The engine block also serves as a reservoir or seat for the cylinder line components, flywheel, and cylinder head.
