One of the common problems that often occurs in car radiators is the presence of cloudy radiator water. This is usually caused by several factors that can sometimes be unexpected. Therefore, proper maintenance is necessary to prevent the radiator water from becoming cloudy.

The radiator is one of the components of the cooling system in a vehicle that functions to cool the performance of the car engine. So, what actually causes the radiator water to become cloudy? Here’s the explanation!

Causes of Cloudy Radiator Water

If you notice that the radiator water in your car is brownish, it indicates that the radiator water in your car is dirty. There are several factors that trigger the change in the radiator water in your vehicle.

Here are other common causes of cloudy radiator water:

· Different Engine Material

The first cause of cloudy radiator water is the difference in materials used in engine manufacturing. The engine block material in cars consists of two materials, namely cast iron and aluminum.

If your vehicle is old or a diesel vehicle, the material often used is cast iron. This can be a cause of the change in radiator water in your vehicle.

Radiator water changes color because the water rapidly alternates between hot and cold, but this is considered a normal condition and does not need to be worried about.

On the other hand, if your vehicle's engine uses aluminum as the base material, it will not cause discoloration, making it similar to regular water and difficult to distinguish.

· Rusty Components

The next cause that can make the radiator water cloudy is the cooling system components starting to rust. This is because the water in the radiator circulates into the engine through the water jacket.

If the radiator, engine block, or other components start to rust, this can cause the water in the radiator to become cloudy or brownish.

· Mineral Deposits from Water

The cooling system should indeed receive proper maintenance by routinely cleaning and replacing the water. If the radiator water has become cloudy, it could be due to mineral deposits from the water.

This occurs because the radiator is filled with regular water, whether tap water or well water. Continuously boiling water can leave scale and cause the radiator water to turn brownish.

Mineral deposits in the water can also trigger other components to rust. As a result, the water mixed with rust and deposits circulates in the engine through the water jacket.

· Frequent Use

With prolonged use beyond the ideal usage limit, the radiator water can also become cloudy, thus reducing its quality.

You can check the color of the radiator water by looking at the reservoir tank that contains the coolant fluid. If the color has changed to cloudy, it is usually contaminated with water, and the additives in it have deteriorated.

If this happens, you need to completely drain the cloudy radiator water and replace it with new coolant. Because if this is left unchecked, the vehicle will overheat more quickly and can even lead to overheating.
